Baptism at Leake

Dawn and Will are old friends of our church. In fact, they got married here! It was wonderful to welcome them again, for a double baptism – of Eloise and Ed.

Mystery plays

On Saturday 29th May, a small group of 5 joined a huge throng  to watch a cast of 200 perform a Mystery Play at York Minster.

Such plays have entertained the people of York since the 1300s enacting scenes from the creation of heaven & earth to the last judgement.

The story of good versus evil, of life & death & of love, betrayal, loss & hope.

After 4 hours our little group emerged somewhat stiffly but enlightened into brilliant sunshine having enjoyed a spectacular performance.

Parish Lunch

Today we had a fabulous parish lunch – we wonder how many churches were eating venison stroganoff today! Around 60 people from the villages attended. Our chefs did us proud.

Visit from the Archbishop

[wppa type=”photo” photo=”1″ size=”0.80″][/wppa]

The Archbishop of York John Sentamu visited St Mary’s on his pilgrimage through his Diocese. He led us prayer before walking into Thirsk. He is pictured here with our vicar Ian Houghton.

St Mary’s Celebrates its Medieval History

[wppa type=”photo” photo=”2″ size=”0.5″ align=”left”][/wppa]Today St Mary’s celebrated its remarkable Medieval history by opening the church for a Medieval Day. Visitors enjoyed tours of the building, learnt about jousting and bee keeping, and talked about archaeology at a stand provided by Jorvik.  There were a number of Medieval games, some hearty food and a specially brewed beer that was dispensed from a cask at the back of church! There was some left at the end of the day, so it may provide a welcome alternative to coffee after the morning service.

We were delighted to welcome a large number of people from the local area and beyond. We even made the local paper.
